Questions
In this month’s video, I answer the following questions:
- (2) Private health insurance & any gotchas?
- Later this month, I’m going to be filming a special video about private health insurance in Mexico with Steph Kempker who is an English-speaking insurance agent with Guardian Insurance.
- Please submit any questions you have for Steph under the “Health Insurance in Mexico” topic in the forum.
- (3) What are some good ways to get acquainted with your new town/city to help you feel more at home in your new surroundings?
- (4) Will the lavandería wash everything including your intimates (underwear)?
- (5) Are self-serve laundromats even available?
- (6) Are there many opportunities for in-person Spanish classes in Querétaro?
- (7) Do you know anyone who has successfully shipped their belongings to Mexico? Is it possible to do it on a tourist visa?
- (8) What is the arts scene like in Querétaro (museums, galleries or artist-run spaces, live music, dance, etc.)?
- (9) Could you discuss renewing your U.S. passport while living in Mexico?
- (10) What do you do for a U.S. address? What about absentee voting? Where do you file taxes?
- Here’s what some members said they are doing for their U.S. address:
- “Before I head to Mexico in the next week or so, I am stopping in South Dakota to establish a domicile. I have a virtual mailbox, which gives me an address that I can use for US mail. In South Dakota, if you stay one night at a campground/hotel, you can then show this as proof of being an “official resident.” Then you can get a driver’s license. After that, I’ll be able to get my vehicle registered too. Two other states that have rather easy ways to establish residency/domicile are Florida and Texas.” -Carrie R.
- “I’m also planning to use a mail service (located in Pittsburgh) that scans incoming mail and sends to me for online review. That allows me to retain a mailing address in western Pennsylvania, where I already have a driver’s license and voting registration.” -Scott T.
- ” I’ve been using TravelingMailbox, which has been good so far. They have a legit address and send an email or app notification when I get mail. They send me a scan of the envelope, and I decide whether I have them open it and scan it, or shred it.” -Michell H.
- Here’s what some members said they are doing for their U.S. address:
- (11) Can you recommend an attorney in Querétaro to help me with permanent residency?
- (12) When applying for residency, do I have to stay in Mexico to wait for the approval?
