Bringing a dog to Mexico

One of our members, Helen, shared some very helpful insights about dog etiquette in Mexico over in the forum. Here’s some of what she had to say:

“In general, Queretanos are dog-lovers, so you shouldn’t have too many problems. Of course, it will limit your housing options, but not terribly. I don’t live in the Centro, so I can’t give you a lot of options about vets.

I will say that you probably won’t have too much of a problem navigating life with a small dog in the Centro. I don’t like bringing my dogs down there because the sidewalks are narrow and often crowded and the smells are too overwhelming for my dogs to behave properly. Also, there is a dearth of grassy areas for dogs to go potty. However, there are some lovely neighborhoods just outside of Centro (Jardines de Querétaro is my favorite) that has good grassy parks for dogs. Cleaning up after your pet is expected and commonly done, although not consistently by all people. (Just like in the US.)

One final note that struck me as odd when I first came here: most of the big parks, like Parque Querétaro 2000, do not allow dogs. So always check before you make the trip.”

Also, here is a popular vet in centro that friends with dogs have recommended.

Our insurance policy is through Grupo Nacional Provincial, and our insurance broker is Santiago Fernandez. He’s a pretty young so even though we’ve only ever spoken to him in Spanish, I’m guessing there’s a good chance he speaks some English: sfernandez@caeinsurance.com
